Happy on Porch

Have you ever jumped out of bed in the morning and 'expected' to have a bad day? ...and then...sure enough!  Have you ever gone to a party and 'expected' to have a bad time? ...and then...sure enough!  Many of us go through life like this.

Did you know that Friday is International Happiness Day?  Wow!  Right up my alley!  My life's work is all about Happiness.  That's all we really want in life...is to be happy, right?

I had lots of happy times this past week.  The rain stopped.  The sun came out.  I went to a movie with friends, enjoyed a BBQ with the neighbors, finished writing my "Steps2Happiness Home Study System", read a book, had a lovely chat with my 91-year old aunt ...sheer happiness.  Just what I expected!

It's all the little things!

And that's the topic for this issue of the ezine – the last in the 4 barriers to living a happy life: Expectations.

So, sit back, relax and expect to get something out of this issue. : )

In the meantime, don't worry, be happy,

Steps to happiness – Barriers to Living a Happy Life (Part 4)

In this series, I have referenced the 4 major barriers to living a happy life. (You can get a copy of earlier issues by visiting my website at www.steps2happiness.com). In the last issue, we examined the 3rd major barrier: Beliefs. Today, we will discuss the 4th major barrier: Expectations!

One habit I have on Sunday mornings, after church, is to come home with my Tim Horton's beverage, turn on the TV and watch "The Hour of Power" with Dr. Robert Schuller. One of his guest preachers has been John Maxwell, whose work I admire and respect. The following is an email I received recently ("A Positive Minute") and I wanted to share it with you since it is an ideal summary to the '4 barriers to living a happy life'. Enjoy!

Life gives you what you expect
July 03, 2009
John C. Maxwell

"What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways." – Job 22:28
The happiest people in life don't necessarily have the best of everything. They just try to make the best of everything. They're like the person in a remote village going to a well everyday to get water who says, "Every time I come to this well, I come away with my bucket full!" instead of, "I can't believe I have to keep coming back to this well to fill up my bucket."

A person's attitude has a profound influence on his approach to life. Ask a coach before a big game whether his attitude and that of his players will make a difference in the outcome of the game. Ask a surgeon if the patient's attitude matters when she's trying to save that life in an emergency room. Ask a teacher if students' attitudes have an impact before they take a test.

One of the things I've learned is that life often gives you whatever you expect from it. If you expect bad things, those are what you get. If you expect good things, you often receive them. I don't know why it works that way, but it does. If you don't believe me, try it out. Give yourself thirty days in which you expect the best of everything: the best parking place, the best table in the restaurant, the best interaction with clients, the best treatment from service people. You'll be surprised by what you encounter, especially if you give your very best to others in every situation as well.

Steps2happiness assignment:

  1. Begin your 30-day trial of expecting the best of everything.

  2. Develop the habit of writing a Gratitude list at the end of each day. Write down 5 things, each day, for which you are grateful. Do it as a family! Watch the difference it will make in your lives.

  3. On Friday, International Happiness Day, plan to do something that makes you happy...with someone who makes you happy. And let me know about your experience. (Pat@steps2happiness.com), ok? Be happy!

My intentions!

I HAVE A DREAM…ACTUALLY, I HAVE A GOAL!

I have set some very lofty business goals for myself for the next 6 months of this year. One of them includes growing the subscriber list for this ezine and I could use your help.

I have set the goal to have 5,000 subscribers by my birthday, August 16th. If each of you would forward this ezine to 7 friends and ask them to sign up, then you will help me to reach this goal...and that would make me very happy! : ) It won't cost you anything but a bit of time and I appreciate having you share my information with your circle of friends.

Please help! And thanks. : )

By Pat Mussieux

"It's authentic - it's refreshing to hear the truth rather than a contrived image or story that is "presentable/acceptable/marketable". It's concise - you put a lot of content in a nice little package. It's a quick read and is particularly suited to your intended use: distribution to seminar
or conference participants as a guidebook. You incorporated your favorite "tools" very well and in a way that might motivate others to try them.Your story provides context…"

~ Louise Wasylenko (divorced), Calgary, Alberta

"As I was reading your book, I could think of so many people who would benefit from reading your book, like a friend who just ended a marriage after many years. Also, I could see that people who had been
caregivers, like myself, for 30 years and then the loss of that person creates a huge void and YOU HAVE to reinvent who you are and what your purpose is going to be! That happened for me when I lost my
Mom after taking care of her so long, a lot of it in good health, but she never drove. As you can see, your book has already stirred many emotions or me..."

~ Sharon Bradley, California

"Well – that was 43 pages jam packed with inspiration, food for thought, direction – calling all those with self-discipline to wake up and live the only life we get to live. It should be a best seller!"
~ Anne Higgins (widow), Toronto, Ontario
