One of the most effective techniques for getting off your "buts" is to control your self-talk!

One of the most effective techniques for getting off your “buts“ is to control your self-talk!

Hi everyone!  I've had the most amazing week.......and have been enjoying the incredible weather that we've had in southwestern Ontario.  My sincere sympathy to those of you in western Canada.  Yikes!  Such horrible 'winter' weather!

While in Toronto on business, I had the pleasure of visiting with some special women.  As some of you know, in 2006, I took a trip around the world on a private plane (www.privatejettours.ca).  Two of the fabulous, and inspiring, women that I met are Tina Henderson and Anne Higgins.  Last week we got together and enjoyed wine, food and laughter!  It was wonderful.

And what does this have to do with our topic this week?  Everything!  When we first started on this theme of having balance in life and creating the life that you want and deserve, we covered many of the fundamental steps to creating that plan.  It is important to take baby steps and set small goals in the beginning; however, it is exciting and stimulating to dream big at the same time.  The thing is that when we begin to set goals, whether small or big, that's when the "ya-buts" pop into our mind and get in the way.  Want to take a world tour on a private plane?  Ya-but........I don't have the money, I don't have the time, I don't have the clothes, who will look after my dog?, that kind of trip is only for 'rich people', what would my friends think?.....and so on and so on.  The "ya-buts" come into play even when we set smaller goals.  When have YOU talked YOU out of doing something you wanted to do? ......take music lessons, write a book, learn to cook, .....you name it.

In my work as a coach, I have heard one excuse after another as to why people put their life on hold.  Some of the barriers can be labelled as habits, attitudes, beliefs and expectations.  As I coach teams and leaders in the business world, the barriers are ego, emotion and control.

When you set goals, and you begin to hear those voices in your head, here's what I want you to do:

1.  Ask yourself whether or not the "ya-buts" can be identified as a habit, attitude, belief, expectation, conditioning, ego, emotion or control.  Once you've identified that, it's a starting point to creating the changes you want.

2.  One of the major barriers to change is your self-talk (that inner voice in your head).  Is your self-talk negative or positive?  Is it encouraging or discouraging?  Here's what I want you to do, over a 24-hour period, in order to become aware of your own self-talk.  Put an elastic on your wrist and, for 24 hours, do not allow your self-talk to be negative, complaining, de-valuing, sarcastic, etc........to yourself or to others around you.  Pay attention over the course of a day and you will be amazed at how proficient you may have become with the sarcasm or negativity.  Every time you have a negative thought, etc., then snap that elastic on your wrist!! Set a goal to turn that around.  You have the power!   Watch, and feel, the difference it makes in your life as you create more positive energy in your mind and in your life.  You, too, can get on the plane!

Happy Pat!

"Pat is a motivational speaker, coach, trainer and author.  If you are planning a conference, staff in-service or require coaching services for you and/or your managers, Pat is the person to contact: pat@patmussieux.com

Pat Mussieux - her name brings to mind enthusiasm, vibrant energy, and a sincere desire to convey her message of positive and valuable strategies for overcoming adversity. Her presentation to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), entitled "From Success to Significance", touched every person in the room. Her interactive and personable style created an atmosphere of trust and provided a safe and caring environment for our members to learn and share. A sense of humour is critical to the success of a speaker in any group, and Pat exceeded our expectations as she shared some of her memorable experiences. She brought us along on her own life's journey and shared incidents that challenged her, as well. She teaches and models the phrase, "If it is to be, it's up to me". Our organization will most definitely invite her to return for another presentation.

Action Steps for This Week:

1.  Take a look at the goals you created (from your spoke on your Balance Wheel) and ask yourself the question: "What's been holding me back?"  What are my "ya-but's"?  Write them down.

2.  Now that you've identified the barriers, begin to write down (for each goal): "What would it look like without the problem?"  "What would it look like/feel like when I achieve that goal?"  Set a date and make it happen!

3.  And, if I have really piqued your interest, e-mail my good friend Ben Nierof (Travel Guild International): tgimail@idirect.ca for more information on the up-coming World Tours!!!  Doesn't mean you 'have to' go this year......but it could certainly go on your Dream List!   I'm one of the Tour Leaders.......think of the fun we could have together.  Let's fly, let's fly away......
