Hi everyone,
Here we are -- it's mid-July already! Where does the time go? Are you having any fun yet? I know I am!
While I did work on Saturday (I had the pleasure of facilitating the Strategic Planning Retreat with Habitat for Humanity Board and Staff members) -- it was a fun group! You can tell by the smiles on their faces in this photo. Along with that, however, I did balance out my weekend and picked blueberries with a good friend, went for a bike ride with the neighbors, had dinner with friends, and visited with some great people at church! It's the little things that can add up to a ton of fun.
It's important to have some balance in life...all work, and no play, makes for a dull life. It also makes for a bumpy ride in life! That's what we're talking about in this issue -- Balance!
Do yourself a favor -- take a minute to sit back and really internalize what we've got to share in this week's note.
In the meantime, don't worry, be happy,
Pat Mussieux

Steps to happiness -- Step #1: Know what you Want! - con't.
In this series, I have referenced the 4 major barriers to living a happy life. (You can get a copy of earlier issues by visiting my website at www.steps2happiness.com). In the last issue, we discussed the Life Balance wheel (briefly) as it is one of the tools I use when coaching clients.
I invited you to get your hands on a copy of a blank Life Balance Wheel and fill it in. Part of the assignment was to give serious consideration to what it looked like? How it felt? Are you a little off balance? ...or a whole lot off balance?
To get things back on track, ask yourself the question: "What's one thing I want to have happen in my life right now that's not happening?" What spoke (on the Balance Wheel) does it apply to? Use that particular spoke, and begin by identifying 3 goals that you can accomplish this summer to help bring some balance back into your life. (Or, this winter, as I know some of my subscribers are in Australia and New Zealand)
You see, one of the reasons our lives get so out of balance is that we have too much on our plates; we are feeling overwhelmed. The way to take back control is to take baby steps. Set some small goals and, once accomplished, celebrate! Wallow in the success, no matter how large -- no matter how small. Then, set another 3 goals. Baby steps, baby steps. That's how you will make progress and you will not only begin to get some balance again, but you will also feel in control of your life. If not you, then who? If not now, then when?
I know, from conversations with friends and neighbors, that meal planning can be a challenge because we are so busy. Poor meal planning can lead to a number of (negative) outcomes: weight gain, loss of sleep, lack of desire to exercise, boredom with food, etc.
Perhaps this example will generate some ideas for you to use:
- Working with the Meal Planning (or Nutrition) spoke on your Life Balance Wheel, identify 3 small goals that will help you progress on the scale of 1-10 on the wheel.
- The first step in menu planning is to look ahead at your week. Are you home all week for meals? Are you taking your lunch to work all 5 days? Are you entertaining at home this week? Are you going out for business luncheons?
- Once you have a sense of how many meals you are planning for, then begin to plan for each day of the week. I typically BBQ a lot in the summer, so for one meal I cook extra chicken (for instance) which then gives me leftovers for my lunch the next day and I can throw the chicken into a salad.
- As I plan my meals, I make my grocery list (usually on Saturday morning). I would often plan for 2 chicken meals, 3 fish meals, a 'left-over' meal and leave the 7th day for anything impromptu. That's a general guideline. My menu planning for the summer varies from my planning for the winter.
- I also like to try a new recipe each week -- nothing complicated, but something easy and tasty. If you check out the website for the Food TV Network, there are some awesome recipes available there. New recipes keep me interested in my menu plans. Kraft also has a great website where you can plug in as few as 2 food items that you have available, and recipes will 'appear'. Great fun!
When we eat right, sleep right and exercise, our energy levels soar! That really adds to our sense of happiness!!!

Steps2Happiness Assignment
- Choose a spoke on your Life Balance Wheel that you would like to work on.
- Identify 3 small goals relative to that spoke.
- Write them down and set a timeline for the week.
- Only share your goals with people who will help you and support you.
- Celebrate the accomplishment of each goal.
- Come back next week...and see what we have 'cooking'! (no pun intended)

I HAVE A DREAM…ACTUALLY, I HAVE A GOAL!
I have set some very lofty business goals for myself for the next 6 months of this year. One of them includes growing the subscriber list for this ezine and I could use your help.
I have set the goal to have 5,000 subscribers by my birthday, August 16th. If each of you would forward this ezine to 7 friends and ask them to sign up, then you will help me to reach this goal...and that would make me very happy! : ) It won't cost you anything but a bit of time and I appreciate having you share my information with your circle of friends.
Please help! And thanks. : ) |

Summer is here and the living is easy!
Summer is also a time of reflection. Who Am I? Am I happy? Are there some changes I'd like to make in my life?
THIS IS ONE BOOK YOU WANT TO READ!
Who am I now?
Simple Steps to Inventing Your Future
After Divorce, Retirement, Death of a Spouse, Empty Nest, etc.
By Pat Mussieux
"It's authentic - it's refreshing to hear the truth rather than a contrived image or story that is "presentable/acceptable/marketable". It's concise - you put a lot of content in a nice little package. It's a quick read and is particularly suited to your intended use: distribution to seminar
or conference participants as a guidebook. You incorporated your favorite "tools" very well and in a way that might motivate others to try them. Your story provides context…"
~ Louise Wasylenko (divorced), Calgary, Alberta
"As I was reading your book, I could think of so many people who would benefit from reading your book, like a friend who just ended a marriage after many years. Also, I could see that people who had been
caregivers, like myself, for 30 years and then the loss of that person creates a huge void and YOU HAVE to reinvent who you are and what your purpose is going to be! That happened for me when I lost my
Mom after taking care of her so long, a lot of it in good health, but she never drove. As you can see, your book has already stirred many emotions or me..."
~ Sharon Bradley, California
"Well -- that was 43 pages jam packed with inspiration, food for thought, direction -- calling all those with self-discipline to wake up and live the only life we get to live. It should be a best seller!"
~ Anne Higgins (widow), Toronto, Ontario
Go to www.steps2happiness.com and get the e-book now...just in time for summer vacation! It also makes a nice gift for a friend
