Pat's Power Points - Volume 1, Issue 4, April 2008
The essential first step for getting balance back in your life is to stop and BREATHE! More on that in a minute......
Welcome back! All I can say is "Wow"!! I have been inundated with e-mails from you since the last issue went out (on Work-a-holics and Balance in LIfe)!!!!! It really struck a nerve. Thank you for all your feedback and questions.
Well, I took some time this past week and drove to Kitchener to meet with my friend and associate Barb Wychopen, who is from Edmonton. (Barb is the co-author of "Contact Centers Unplugged - Introducing the Performance Model for the Development of the Professional Agent". She can be reached at barbwy@telus.net for your contact center training needs. Barb introduced me to a new client in Kitchener. Thanks, Barb! I do love referrals!)
Now, back to the topic of balance in life. From your e-mails and conversations, I am learning that many of you have narrowed your vocabulary down to a few words: busy, tired, stressed, unhappy, stuck and (for those of you who are self-employed).....guilty!! Oh my goodness, people, how very sad! This is not a dress rehearsal......this is the real thing. Time to get a grip and time to put on the brakes. (I'm sure many of you are saying, right now, 'easy for YOU to say........you don't have my family, or you don't know my boss.......") Yes, it is easy for me to say because I've "been there"! (I wrote the book!) I'm going to share some of my favorite, and very effective, techniques with you. I will give credit
for much of this information to my good friends Lou and Diane Tice of the Pacific Institute (www.loutice.com) with whom I worked for many years. However, I will take credit for applying the information and for making significant changes in my life.
Ok, let's get started.
Step 1: google 'life balance wheel'. You will find many good samples of the wheel available. Pick one that works for you and complete it according to the directions given. Print it. Keep it handy as we go through a few more steps over the next few weeks.
Step 2: take a blank piece of paper. Along the left-hand side, create a column and write down your name and then the names of the people (and pets) who are important to you in your life. Along the top of the page, write down today's date, and then a few inches to the right, mark 2013, move a few more inches and write down 2018, a few more inches and write down 2023. (this is a real test of my communication skills.......) Now, next to your name (and under the 'today's date column", write down your age. Continue across the page so that you have written your age over the next 20 years. Continue this exercise with each person that you have listed. Once complete, stop and take a very good look at this page! Any ah-ha's???? Time waits for no one!
What are you waiting for? And who is waiting to spend time with you?
Ok, that's the beginning. And as my dear mentor, Dr. Robert Schuller, says: "Beginning is half done." In our next issue, I will take you through 2 more steps for getting your life back. Be ready; it's coming next week. Can you hardly wait? I hope so!

“Pat, your recent seminar on "If It’s to Be, It’s Up To Me" really hit home for myself and some of my business colleagues. So many of our us leaders and our employees go through difficult life transitions that affect every aspect of our lives including our careers and, without proper management, can leave us shattered.
Your seminar shared the insights of how one can develop the right mindset and the determination (along with the tools/skills) to take us forward. It highlighted how to pull from our own intrinsic strengths, and lean on our support systems to achieve our vision.
Thank you for your inspirational book (“Who Am I Now?”) to complement your seminar and to reiterate so much of those goals and commitments that you made on the journey to your success.”

Action Steps for Today:
1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.
2. Sit in silence for at least 5 minutes each day. Buy a lock if you have
to. BREATHE!
